General

Do you accept book donations?

Yes, we accept small amounts (no more than 10 at one time) of new or gently used books. Please drop off materials in person during our open hours so our staff can assist you. Please do not leave boxes of used books outside the library or donate books through our book return slot.

Can I donate money to the library?

We are grateful for your support! We accept cash, card or cheque donations in person at the library, or you can donate online here. All donations $10 and above are eligible for a donation tax receipt.

How do I apply to work or volunteer at the library?

Employment and volunteer opportunities are posted on this webpage. Openings will also be shared on Facebook and Instagram, so follow us there to stay in the loop.

Can I hold a meeting at the library?

Small groups are welcome to meet at the library, but we cannot guarantee a private space. We have tables and chairs available, and encourage you to hang out as long as you’d like, as long as you are not disruptive to other users. If you need a private room, there is one small room available (comfortably seating up to 10 people) free of charge, on a first come, first served basis. This room cannot be booked in advance, and may at times be reserved for use by library staff to host programs and events.

Do you have museum passes?

Yes, we have several museum passes in our collection available for you to borrow. We do not have passes to the Aquatarium or to the Brockville Museum.

Membership

How do I get a library card?

Library cards are free to anyone who lives, works, attends school or pays taxes in Brockville. Photo ID and proof of eligibility (such as a drivers license with a Brockville address on it, a property tax bill, or a paystub from a Brockville employer) are required for registration. Learn more here.

I don't live, work or attend school in Brockville. Can I get a library card?

Non-residents can purchase a library card for $40 charged annually. This is roughly equivalent to the amount that Brockville taxpayers are charged in their tax bills to support the library.

Where can I use my BPL library card?

Brockville Public Library cards can only be used at the Brockville Public Library. We do not have a reciprocal borrowing agreement with any neighbouring libraries.

I don't have a fixed address. Can I get a library card?

Yes, we can provide you with a free library card without a fixed address. However, there may be borrowing restrictions placed on such cards that limit how many items can be checked out at once. Please be prepared to provide identification, or a referral letter from a social services agency.

Do I need a library card to access library programs and services?

No, a library card is only required to borrow materials. You may attend programs, use the library space or access our public computers and other services without a library card.

Why is my card expired?

Every two years we require you to confirm that your information (address, email, telephone number, etc.) is accurate and up to date. If you signed up for a library card online, you are registered for a temporary card that expires after a shorter time period. You must visit us in person with identification to complete the registration process.

Borrowing

How long can I borrow items?

Books, magazines and video games may be borrowed for 3 weeks. New DVDs may be borrowed for 2 days. Older DVDs, museum passes and other experience items may be borrowed for 7 days.

Do you charge fines on overdue items?

We do not charge overdue fines. Exceptions may be made for interlibrary loan materials (materials brought in from other libraries) if we are billed for such items from the lending library. Book replacement fees will also be charged if an item is not returned after several weeks past its due date.

I am not done with an item. Can I renew it?

For your convenience, eligible items are now renewed automatically. Provided there are no holds on the item, they can be auto-renewed up to 2 times.

Library materials can be renewed except in the following circumstances:

  • There is a hold request on the item.
  • The maximum renewal limit on the item has been reached (2 times).
  • You have an outstanding balance of more than $10 on your account.
  • Your library card has expired.
  • Your item is non-renewable (includes interlibrary loans, museum passes, book club kits).
How will I know when an item I have on hold is ready for pickup?

We will contact you when your item is ready. If we have your email on file, you will receive an email. Otherwise, you will receive a phone call from our staff. If you check your online account, you can also see the status of your item(s) on hold, including your approximate place in the waitlist.

What happens if I lose or damage a book?

You are responsible for paying a replacement fee for any lost or damaged materials on your account.

Can I provide my own replacement copy?

No, you must pay the replacement fee, based on the actual price the library paid for the item.

Technology

How do I connect to the public WiFi?

From your device, choose the Brockville Library network. No password is required.

How do I use the public computers?

Use your library card to log in at any available public computer. If you do not have a library card, see a staff member at the information desk for a guest pass.

Can I print from my laptop, phone or tablet?

Yes, you may print from your own device using our mobile printing service. Learn more here.

Online Resources

What do I need to borrow ebooks and audiobooks?

You will need an active library card, your PIN or password, and an appropriate device such as a smartphone or tablet. We recommend downloading the apps (Libby and Hoopla) to your smart device, rather than using a PC or laptop. Learn more here.

Why can I only borrow 4 items a month on Hoopla?

Hoopla charges the library for each title used. As a result, we must limit the number of titles you can borrow each month to remain within our budget.

Why do I have to wait for certain items on Libby?

Libraries buy “copies” of digital titles like ebooks and audiobooks from publishers. Publishers typically require that each digital copy is only loaned to one person at a time, just like a physical library book. This ensures that authors, narrators and other creators are paid fairly for their work, even if it’s consumed digitally.

If all copies of a digital title are checked out, you can place a hold and wait for it to become available.

Can I receive technical help with Libby and Hoopla in person?

Yes, BPL staff can offer tech troubleshooting assistance. We recommend that you bring your device with you so that we can best assist you.
